Restore smooth, precise table adjustment on your Vintage Delta Deluxe 6" Jointer with this complete adjusting shaft kit. Designed as a direct replacement for the original Delta DJ-18 adjusting shaft, this kit includes the additional components recommended during installation to improve operation and extend service life.

After restoring numerous Delta Deluxe jointers, we've found that replacing only the adjusting shaft often leaves worn thrust surfaces that continue to create unnecessary friction and wear. For that reason, this kit includes the components needed to properly support the shaft and absorb thrust loads in both directions of travel.

Kit Includes

• Precision replacement adjusting shaft (replaces Delta Part No. DJ-18)
• One pair of 1/4" solid brass locking bullets
• Two 3/8" I.D. stainless steel backup washers
• Two 3/8" I.D. oil-impregnated bronze thrust washers
• One 1/8" × 1" spring pin for handwheel installation

Improved Thrust Bearing Support

The adjusting shaft is subjected to thrust loads every time the handwheel is used to raise or lower the infeed or outfeed table. As the gibs are properly adjusted and table movement becomes tighter and more precise, these thrust loads increase.

When rotating the handwheel in one direction, the load is transferred toward the front of the machine. Rotating in the opposite direction transfers the load toward the rear. Without proper thrust surfaces, these forces can accelerate wear on both the shaft and the cast iron housing.

This kit uses stainless steel backup washers combined with oil-impregnated bronze thrust washers to provide smooth, low-friction bearing surfaces that absorb these loads and promote long service life.

Installation

Install one stainless steel backup washer followed by one bronze thrust washer on the stepped portion of the shaft inside the table casting before inserting the shaft.

After the shaft is installed, place the second stainless steel backup washer and bronze thrust washer on the outside of the casting before installing the handwheel.

Push the handwheel firmly against the outer stainless washer before tightening the handwheel set screw. This arrangement allows the thrust washers to support the shaft during adjustment in both directions.

Important: The inside washer pair must be installed as the shaft is inserted into the casting and cannot be added afterward.
