VINTAGE DELTA 10" UNISAW POINTER CASTING REPLACEMENT
Full Description
Pointer Casting Replacement for Vintage Delta 10" Unisaw
Replaces Obsolete Delta Part No. LTA-459
Is your Unisaw blade elevation lock slipping even after installing new brass bullets?
The problem may not be the bullets.
Many vintage Delta Unisaws suffer from excessive wear inside the original die-cast zinc pointer casting (LTA-459). While restorers often replace the brass bullets, the pointer casting itself is frequently overlooked. Once the bore inside the casting becomes worn, new bullets alone cannot properly lock the elevation shaft.
To solve this problem, we developed a precision-machined steel replacement assembly designed to permanently eliminate the wear issues associated with the original die-cast part.
Why the Original Design Fails
Delta originally used a wedge-style locking system on early Unisaws before switching to the familiar brass bullet system around 1950.
Both systems operate by forcing locking components outward against the inside wall of the surrounding bore. Unfortunately, neither design retracts the locking components when the knob is loosened. As a result, the wedges or bullets continue to rub against the inside surface whenever the handwheel is turned.
On the blade elevation lock, that wear occurs inside the pointer casting.
The original LTA-459 casting was manufactured from die-cast zinc, a material significantly softer than the steel wedges and even softer than the shaft itself. Over decades of use, the inside bore becomes worn and grooved.
When this occurs:
- The elevation lock may not hold properly.
- New brass bullets often fail to correct the problem.
- Excessively worn castings can allow the bullets to overextend.
- Severe wear can make disassembly difficult or impossible.
If your elevation lock still slips after installing new brass bullets, a worn pointer casting is often the real culprit.
Our Solution
Our replacement pointer casting is manufactured from three CNC-machined pieces of C1018 steel.
After machining, the components are precision fixtured and TIG welded into a single assembly. The completed weldment is then precision bored to provide a proper fit on the front rocker casting bushing and finished with a black oxide coating for corrosion resistance.
Unlike the original die-cast zinc component, this steel assembly will not wear from normal contact with the locking wedges or brass bullets.

Compatibility
Fits many vintage Delta 10" Unisaws utilizing the original LTA-459 pointer casting and brass bullet locking system.
If you are unsure whether your saw uses this casting, send us a photo and we will gladly verify compatibility before purchase.
Important
Installing new brass bullets in a worn pointer casting will not restore proper locking performance. This replacement casting addresses the actual wear point in the elevation lock system and provides a long-term solution for maintaining proper blade height adjustment.
