DELTA DP-220 DRILL PRESS QUILL RETURN SPRING & CUP ASSEMBLY

This complete kit includes a brand-new quill return spring manufactured specifically for the Delta DP-220 drill press and an original zinc-plated OEM spring cup.

Kit Includes:

• New DP-220 quill return spring
• Zinc-plated OEM spring cup
• Two 10-32 x 3/16-inch socket-head screws
• One 1/2-20 jam nut
• One 1/2-20 nylon-insert lock nut

Installation and Adjustment Instructions

1. The spring and cup assembly arrives assembled and ready to install on the drill press head casting.

2. Some DP-220 head castings have square bosses on the cup-seating surface. These bosses fit into the notches around the spring cup and prevent it from rotating.

Other DP-220 castings use two small shoulder bolts around the perimeter of the cup to engage the cup’s notches. If your casting has the square bosses, no additional hardware is required. If your casting has tapped holes for the shoulder bolts, install the two original bolts now.

If your casting has the tapped holes but the original bolts are missing, two 10-32 x 3/16-inch socket-head screws are included with this kit.

3. Install the quill in the drill press. Insert the pinion shaft so the slotted 1/2-inch-diameter end extends through the center of the spring-cup mounting area.

4. Lock the quill in its uppermost position using the bent lock lever located at the front of the head casting.

5. Engage the end of the spring with the slot in the pinion shaft, then push the spring cup completely onto the shaft. Check how the cup’s notches engage the square bosses or shoulder bolts on the casting.

6. Thread the included 1/2-20 jam nut onto the shaft. Stop when the nut is approximately 5/16 inch away from the spring cup.

Pull the cup outward far enough for its notches to clear the bosses or bolts. Verify that the cup can then be rotated counterclockwise.

7. You are now ready to apply tension to the quill return spring.

Get a firm grip on the spring cup. It may help to place the end of one finger against the cup’s hook for better control. Pull the cup away from the casting and rotate it counterclockwise one notch at a time.

After each adjustment, push the cup back against the casting so its notches engage the bosses or bolts. This temporarily locks the cup in position and removes the spring tension from your hand.

Reposition your grip, pull the cup outward again, and rotate it farther counterclockwise. Be careful—the spring will try to unwind clockwise whenever the cup is disengaged.

Repeat this process until the cup has been rotated approximately one full turn, or 360 degrees, from its starting position. Reengage the cup with the bosses or bolts, then spin the jam nut toward the cup to hold the adjustment temporarily.

8. Release the quill lock lever and rotate the pinion shaft as though you were lowering the quill to drill a hole.

The quill should return completely to its uppermost position on its own. If it does not, securely grip the spring cup, disengage it from the bosses or bolts, and rotate it farther counterclockwise.

Repeat the adjustment until the quill reliably returns to its fully raised position without assistance.

9. Once the spring tension is properly adjusted, thread the jam nut toward the spring cup. Position it close to the cup, but do not tighten it firmly against the cup.

Install the included 1/2-20 nylon-insert lock nut and tighten it securely against the jam nut to lock the adjustment in place.

10.           The quill return spring installation and adjustment are now complete.
